Lloyd Johanningmeier – Owner of Scenic View Ranch
“50 years ago, I saw my first Paint Horse Show. W.L. Miller was showing Little Joe Bailey. I decided I wanted to breed some mares to this stallion, so my friend, Gary Soper, and I went to talk to Lowell. For those who knew Lowell Miller, you won’t be surprised when I say that I went home owning Little Joe Bailey. That’s how I started raising Paints and Quarter Horses. Lowell and I became the best of friends and I learned plenty about the business from him.”
In 1983, Lloyd completed a course in Equine Reproduction and Artificial Insemination at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine with Dr’s Pickett and Voss.
In 2005, Lloyd and Janet had the opportunity to buy a gorgeous black AQHA colt by One Hot Krymsun from Sue and Richard Voss. They named him Scenic Back Road. Then they watched in amazement as Becky Bailey took One Hot Krymsun back to the World to win the AQHA World Championship in Senior Western Pleasure that year. No other horse has won the triple crown of western pleasure. He earned a World Championship in 2 year old snaffle bit, Junior and Senior Western Pleasure. The following year Lloyd and Janet bought another colt by One Hot Krymsun from Becky Bailey. This one was a beautiful Paint colt out of a crop out daughter of Zippo Pine Bar. They named him Scenic Rio Krymsun. Their mares are now producing the best foals they’ve ever had. In 2009, they added a new AQHA/APHA stallion, Scenic Royal Flush, sired by HBF Iron Man out of a daughter of Zippo Jack Bar. “Flash” was shown successfully in Jr.HUS at Paint World placing 4th overall and Reserve NSBA. At Reichert’s, he was co-champion in the Color Maturity HUS. Over the years, they have purchased a few more great mares to breed to these stallions; including daughters of A Good Machine, Blazing Hot, Zips Chocolate Chip, A Sudden Impulse, Iron Enterprise, Good Version , Potential Investment etc.
Since her retirement from her job as a letter carrier in Bettendorf earlier this year, Janet is keeping the books for the ranch. Years of delivering mail and an injury with subsequent surgery to her hands, Janet is unable to train or ride horses like she used to. As a team though, with Lloyd being her hands, (she is his legs), they manage to care for all the broodmares and foals. Janet and Lloyd met at the Iowa Paint Futurity in 2002, introduced by Becky (Rockow) and Andy Woodhull. Janet has a love of equine photography; she even took a course presented at Snowy Range Ranch, WY, with Larry Larson.
Janet has a daughter Breigh Anna and son in law, Kevin Haggarty who live in southern CA. Breigh is an Occupational Therapist, having received her Masters Degree from St. Ambrose University. They share a joy in outdoor sports, staying fit and healthy. Janet’s favorite quote is one her mother used to say, “Go outside!”
Lloyd’s son and right hand man, Rex, married the love of his life, Lynn in 2008 and they live here at the ranch. They raised Lynn’s two sons, Ethan and Dustin and are grandparents to Ethan’s daughter, Holly. Rex grew up milking cows every day before and after school. After completing Mechanics School, Rex served his country by joining the Army Reserves. He now helps manage Scenic View Ranch. Rex keeps the machinery running and cares for the livestock. He can handle all aspects of the breeding procedure. Rex has a wonderful positive attitude, loves to laugh and is kind to all the animals. Rex and Lloyd have been working together all these years and there is not a better team, they get the work done so cheerfully. Rex’s favorite quote is “It takes a Big Dog to weigh a ton.”
KK was hired to ride horses in preparation for the sale. She started the 2-year olds under saddle and tunes up the 3-year olds. She pitches in where ever she is needed. Kaylee grew up buying ponies, breaking them to ride and re-selling them. Her mother, Jeannie Kapraun, a riding instructor outside of Peoria, IL, was the driving force behind Kaylee’s love of horses and all kinds of critters. Kaylee has interned with Mark Lyon (2008 Mustang Makeover champion and 2009 Road To The Horse winner) and Miranda Lyon (Holder of 2 National Championship titles in Cowboy Mounted Shooting). Recently, she has worked for the Griffin Quarter Horse Ranch, Marietta, OK prepping horses for their dispersal sale, and in Chiloquin, OR, riding reined cow horses and doctoring cattle. Then in July, she rode Smart Sanlena Fox, from Scenic View Ranch, in a clinic with professional reining trainer, Craig Johnson. KK’s favorite quote is “Easy there, Wildfire” and “It’s all good.”
KC is a farrier, colt starter, and a calf roper from Cresco, Iowa. He has been wonderful help putting the first rides on our 2-year olds. He is all about getting the work done, pitching in without being asked. KC has two young sons, Monty and Tyler. They are good little cowboys.
